| Artist: Dean Cornwell (1892-1960) Description: Fashionable man standing next to furnace. Caption: "A last look at a well-dressed friend" Publication information: Advertisement for The American Radiator Company. Literature: 1924 Art Directors Club annual. Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Size: 32 x 36” Signature: not signed, as is typical for an advertising commission of the day. Condition: Professionally relined within the last five years or so. Whoever did the conservation work was truly obsessive, going so far as to split the old stretcher bars and attach the facing of them to the new ones. A "window" in the new canvas shows the advertiser's notations on verso. Unframed. Comment: The current market for Cornwell is strong. The owner of the painting inherited it from someone who purchased it at a reasonable price, so I (in turn) am able to offer it at a level that’s likely below market. Were it signed, one could easily expect to pay more like $45,000 for it. This is a real winner of a painting by one of the most respected talents in the field. Price: $29,000. |
