| Artist: Mead Schaeffer (1898-1980)
Description: Scene in a saloon... soldier propositioned by dance hall girl. Caption: “'It's kind of you,' he said quietly. 'It's more than kind, but I've spent my last coin.'” Publication information: Story illustration for “The Chisholm Trail” by Borden Chase, serialized in The Saturday Evening Post starting in 1946. This piece is from the first installment of the story. Medium: Oil on board Size: 21 x 16” Signature: signed lower right. Condition: Excellent, recently cleaned. Tastefully framed. Comment: While Schaeffer's most closely associated with his lush painterly illustrations of the 1920's, this piece is from a period of his career in which he was combining the composition of the earlier work with the more precise approach of his later career. A copy of the magazine is included with the purchase, with this appearing as a full-page illustration on page 11. I've just realized that the continuation of the story toward the back of the magazine has been torn out... wish I could remember where I bought the magazine. Price: $5,400
