Detail of back

Artist: Peter Arno (1904-1968)

Description: Bearded lady and tattooed man at the circus.

Caption: "I'm afraid you've gotten the wrong impression of me, Mr. McCarthy."

Publication information: Gag cartoon for The New Yorker magazine, published on May 1st, 1937.

Medium: Brush and ink

Size: 18 x 12.75”

Signature: signed lower center.

Condition: The usual toning from age, overall very good, matted and framed.

Comment: It's worth noting, I think, that at the time when this was published... the type of all-over tattooing seen here was reserved for circus freaks and aboriginals. Arno was well-acquainted with circus performers and in fact did a number of works for Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus.

Price: SOLD
