Artist: John Gannam (1907-1965)

Description: Western couple and dogs paused.

Caption: not known

Publication information: Story illustration for “Cold Trails” by Alan LeMay. Serialized in Collier's magazine, 1933.

Medium: watercolor en grisaille

Size: 18 x 15.5”

Signature: not signed

Condition: Image area is very good. Some light adhesive residue outside of image area. Not framed

Comment: Gannam's approach to illustrating comes across as very loose and gestural. Appearances to the contrary, he'd often rework his originals several times prior to turning them over to the magazines for reproduction. His pictures were popular enough that the art directors tolerated his perfectionist tendencies.

Price: $2,800.
