| Artist: Will Ladd Taylor (1854-1926) Description: Pensive woman in interior. Caption: “Mariana: The night is dreary. He cometh not, she said.” Publication information: Poem illustration for Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Marianna”. Was most likely included in a compilation of Tennyson’s works or in a more general survey of poetry. Literature: Probably originally done for Harper's or Scribner's, magazines that utilized Taylor's talents frequently. Medium: Watercolor en grisaille Size: 12.25 x 8.5” Signature: signed and dated (1887) lower right. Condition: Very good condition, in a beautiful, hand-painted custom frame with a silk mat and gold liner; measuring 24.25 x 19.5" overall. There is some wear to the edges of the frames, but it’s ready to hang. Comment: While Taylor is no longer exactly a household name, in his day he was among the most popular, visible and highly paid of American illustrators. This is a beautifully quiet piece which shows the artist at the peak of his form. Price: SOLD |
