Description: Goddess of the harvest. Caption: not known Publication information: Magazine cover illustration, August 1899, probably for Scribner's magazine. Medium: Gouache on board Size: 12.75 x 12.5” Signature: signed and dated, lower right. Condition: Very good, modestly framed. Comment: The last decade of the 19th century was an important period in the evolution of contemporary graphic design. A part of the changing aesthetic involved a blurring of the lines between the types of illustrations that had traditionally appeared on the covers of magazines, those for advertising purposes and those point of purchase. This piece could as easily have been used as an advertising poster for the magazine, or as a fruit crate end panel. I'm presently in search of a copy of the magazine and if I can come up with one in the interim, a copy of the magazine will be included in the purchase.
