Artist: Ronald Searle (b. 1920)

Description: General Motors Pavilion at the 1964 World's Fair.

Caption: “The General Motors exhibit, which is entitled to call itself a Futurama if it really wants to, is the only building in the world that is shaped like a helicopter and accommodates 72,000 visitors a day. It also has an ominously self-willed appearance and the biggest tailfin in captivity. Anything may happen.”

Publication information: Illustration for “A Glorious Nightmare” by Peter Lyon, appearing in HOLIDAY magazine of July, 1964.

Medium: pen and ink, watercolor

Size: 14.25 x 19”

Signature: signed lower left.

Condition: Very good, matted not framed.

Comment: Searle's keen sense of observation and humor are a fine pairing with his strong draftsmanship. Since turning 90 earlier this year, he has attracted another generation of fans. In fact, he's probably more instantly-recognizable now than ever before... a great testimonial to this prolific artist. A copy of the magazine accompanies the purchase of the artwork.

Price: $4,250.
