| Artist: Adolph Kronengold (1900-1986) Description: Traffic entering the Holland Tunnel. Publication information: Unpublished version of a cover design for The New Yorker. Literature: See “The Complete Book of Covers from The New Yorker, 1925-1989, published by Alfred A. Knopf (1989)… especially p. 52 showing a published Kronengold design of the inside of the Holland Tunnel. Medium: Gouache or tempera Size: 11.5 x 8.5” Signature: Signed lower left. Condition: Areas of darkening gouache as well as scattered minor accretions and rubbing. Tastefully matted and framed Comment: The prestige of having ones artwork reproduced on the cover of The New Yorker meant that the competition to be chosen was fierce. Many artists did fully realized proposals for inspection by the art and editorial staff.
