Not yet known, quite likely a story illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, published in 1916.

Wolff pencil on lightweight illustration board

Size:
8.5 x 12”

Signature:
Signed and dated lower left with a later inscription added by the artist in ballpoint.

Condition:
Image area is very good with minor loss outside of reproduced areas.

Comment:
Early in his career Brown followed closely the techniques of his idol, Frederic R. Gruger. The sensitivity of Brown’s handling was a good fit to the type of general fiction popular at the time.
