| Artist: Walter M. Baumhofer (1904-1987) Description: Young woman with bouquet of lilies in empty church. Caption: "Alone in the great church, Frances found peace at last as she fashioned the flowers her brother had loved into an Easter gift for the living… and then the door opened and the world walked in." Publication information: story illustration for “The Heavy Stone” by Jessamyn West, appearing in American magazine of March, 1948. Literature: Includes a full copy of the magazine. Medium: Oil on canvas Size: 33.5 x 24.5” image size. Stretched canvas is 35 x 26” Signature: Signed lower left. Condition: Very good. Frame though seems to be somewhat bowed and has probably influenced the stretcher bars too. Comment: As a mainstay of the pulp magazine world, Baumhofer found it difficult to get steady assignments from the slick magazines early on in his career. One of the few general-interest, large circulation magazines to use his talent consistently was American magazine. Here he shows the strengths of composition and story-telling that stood him in good stead in his long career with the pulps, through more mainstream readership and ultimately to a career as a popular calendar illustrator.
