| Artist: Mario Cooper (1905-1995) Description: Couple consulting note by matchlight as boatman waits in darkness. Caption: “Rafe read ‘You are expected to be by the spring on Dune Bar tomorrow morning early.” Publication information: Story illustration for Beggars All by Katharine Newlin Burt, serialized in Woman’s Home Companion, 1932. Literature: Readers of Illustration magazine will recognize this image as my advertisement in issue #25 . Medium: Watercolor. Size: 11.5 x 16.25” Signature: signed lower right. Condition: Good. The illustration has been peeled from the thicker illustration board. This was done by the artist, or at least at his behest. Those of you who have a large number of works on illustration board will well understand the space and weight concerns involved. Comment: As is true of the best illustrators for mystery stories, Cooper gives us just enough information to draw us into the story.
