| Artist: Andre Francois (1915-2005) Description: Clock-faced man doffing newspaper hat to reveal the brightness of The New York Times. Caption: “There’s no Times like the present” Publication information: Advertisement for The New York Times in 1985. I believe that this was also used in poster form in Manhattan bus shelters. Medium: mixed media with oil pastel, gouache, ink and collaged clock faces Size: 11.75 x 9” Signature: initialed lower right and also with the artist’s name typeset there. Condition: Excellent condition in an elegant museum quality mat and frame. Comment: Francois’ greatest works are scarce on the market, owing to the fact that he kept most of his favorite efforts. Scores of them were destroyed by a studio fire late in his life. This comes from a period in the artist’s career when he was producing cover artwork for The New Yorker on a regular basis.
