Description: Richard Harris as King Arthur and Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere for Camelot.

Publication information: Final preliminary sketch for Camelot movie poster design. The movie was released in October 1967, so the artwork was executed in either 1966 or early 1967.

Literature: The published version of this composition has been widely reproduced, see for example Illustration magazine issue #6 which features a lengthy profile of Peak.

Signature: not signed.

Condition: Overall very good. It should be remembered though that as a working preliminary done for the approval of the art director, the work was done for a specific purpose and was not meant to survive for more than forty years. The work is “floated” in an understated gold-colored frame… though the frame is not pictured here.

Comment: Peak’s innovative approach to design and composition is legendary. The poster design for Camelot is frequently cited as one of the benchmarks of modern commercial illustration. The long-awaited definitive book on the artist is in the works and is planned for a 2009 release.
