Artist: James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960)

Description:
Man in blackface crouched by desk as butler looks on.

Caption:
not readily known

Publication information:
Likely a magazine story illustration, though Flagg also illustrated more than his share of the book adaptations of the timeless P.G. Wodehouse stories.

Medium:
Pen and ink

Size:
23 x 29”

Signature:
not signed.

Condition:
Printer’s indications in top quarter of the composition, the usual surface dirt, overall good, not framed.

Comment:
While this work is not signed, there’s certainly no mistaking Flagg’s style or the characters of Wodehouse. This may be only the right half of the composition as the pen strokes go to the left edge of the sheet. Further, the “page 250” notation leaves the impression that this is a book illustration rather than in the magazine story format. This original comes from the estate of an illustrator who knew Flagg.

Price:
$1,450.
