Comment: When I received this piece on consignment, I knew that it had to do with the Famous Artists School, so I wrote to Walt Reed, the answer man for all things American illustration-related. He replied: “Nice to see the Helck painting again. As surrogate instructors for the big 12 faculty members at Famous Artists School we were ‘taught’ by them to critique student lesson assignments on their behalf. In one such case, Peter Helck gave us an assignment to do a painting on the subject of dismantling old locomotives at a railroad graveyard, using reference material that he provided. He did one himself and we all got together a month later with our and his paintings to thrash out the subject and gain his insights. This picture is Helck’s contribution. It was not included in the [FAS] advanced course, but I did include another of Helck’s preliminaries [for the railroad graveyard assignment] as the endpapers in the first edition of “The Illustrator in America.” This is a strong picture and significant historically.
