Condition: Overall very good. There’s a little bit of cupping of the paint, typically associated with paintings of this size and vintage. The canvas has become quite brittle over the years and a relining wouldn’t be a bad idea. The canvas retains a white painted border all the way around the image area, so, if restretching then a somewhat smaller size is called for. Not framed.

Comment: When I originally saw the initials on this piece, the first artist to come to mind is Edith Ballinger Price. However, while writing the description, I’ve also come to consider Ellen B. T. Pyle (Howard Pyle’s sister-in-law) whose style of painting is much more reminiscent of the subject at hand than is that of Price. While the paint strokes are similar to those of Pyle, the way the initials are formed is not. Perhaps this makes it a later work, or by a different artist completely. There appears to be something scratched into the white area below the initials… try as I might, I can’t decipher it. This much is certain… it says neither Pyle nor Price.
