| Artist: Wallace Morgan (1873-1948) Description: Elegant people at the coat check. Caption: “The coatroom boy leans out of his kennel and cries, imperiously: ‘Have your coat and hat checked?’” Publication information: Story illustration for Collier’s magazine, 1910. Was later also used in Julian Street’s compilation of the “Welcome To Our City” stories, published by John Lane in 1913. Medium: Pen and ink. Size: 9.25 x 7.5” Signature: signed and dated lower right. Condition: Good, not framed, housed in old mat. Comment: As was true of many illustrators of the period, Morgan came from a background in the newspapers. His ability to capture the essence of a story with relative ease and nonchalance set him apart from the generations to follow. He was easily the equal talent-wise of Everett Shinn, George Luks, John Sloan and George Bellows. Includes a copy of the book. Price: SOLD |
