| Artist: Richard Taylor (1902-1970) Description: A new tackling dummy improves a football team’s performance. Caption: “It’s brought out twice as many for spring training as last year.” Publication information: The New Yorker, May 4th, 1940. Literature: “The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker” edited by Robert Mankoff, published by Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers, 2004. Medium: Pen and ink and watercolor en grisaille Size: 7.25 x 12.25” Signature: Signed lower right. Condition: Very good, matted, not framed. Comment: Taylor’s cartoons are instantly recognizable by the exaggerated eyes of the characters. His sense of humor tended to be at once jaded and suggestive. Because The New Yorker, catered to a more well-read and open minded segment of the public than, say The Saturday Evening Pos cartoons such as this and their creator flourished there. Price: SOLD |
