Description:  Graduates attempting to set world on fire

Provenance: Ex collection of Charles Martignette, who apparently acquired from Fadley Galleries, Miami. The gallery’s name is stamped on verso though someone crossed it out— likely years and years ago.  Comment:  A fine example of both Lowell’s abilities and his sense of humor. Note how the male graduate has failed to set the world on fire, now it’s the young woman’s turn. It’s open-ended in that we don’t know whether she’ll be successful. An enduring allegory of modern life.

Caption ‘Setting the World on Fire.’
Condition Overall very good, though face of art is glued to back of matting. Famed (with non-glare glass). I think that this piece deserves a new piece of plexiglass. When it sells, I will provide that as my gift to the buyer. That said, I’ll need to be reminded of my promise.

Publication Information Presumably LIFE magazine, ca. 1910. In fact someone other than Lowell has written “LIFE magazine, Jan. 30” on verso. I did some rooting around looking at issues of the magazine dated Jan. 30th but didn’t find this piece in 1896, 1902, 1908, 1913 or 1919.
