Description:  German soldiers pillaging village

Comment:  As fine a Soulen as I’ve ever seen. Not the best photo ever, but the best I could do myself. The composition, the colors, the storytelling… everything about this painting works well. Published just two weeks prior to the end of World War I, it’s a shame (though far from surprising) that this was reproduced so small, and in black and white. Based on the hand-lettered caption in lower right, I believe that Soulen intended for this piece to be reused as a poster image promoting the War Savings Stamps program. Before that took place the Great War ended and the need to remind people of what happened had dissipated. A museum quality piece by the workhorse for The Post who should be more widely heralded
