Description: Woman on horse with whip. Gunslinger, gambler, cattle and Indians nearby

Comment:  A really nice example of pre-War movie advertising art. Oftentimes, and especially with regards to Western art, I find myself critical of the “200 Things Going on at Once” school of illustrating. That said, when there’s the implied passage of time involved, it not only makes sense, but works. Film directed by Wesley Ruggles (1940) based on the serialized C.B. Kelland story which appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in 1939. The magazine story was also illustrated by Clark and it’s partly on that basis that I attribute this work to him. The movie poster was published in a couple different forms and as was typical, elements of the composition were repositioned for the poster(s). I’ll show one, though I don’t have the printed piece to accompany the art’s purchase.
